Joe
Clark first went to sea as a nine year-old boy
in the newly re-conditioned RMS Orion. The voyage
to Australia took five weeks. He returned in
the same ship some five years later by which
time his love of the sea and ships was firmly
embedded.
As soon as he was able to leave school, he joined
the Orient Line as a Cadet Purser. He served
on Otranto, Orontes, Orion, Orcades, Orsova
and the Empire Orwell. He sailed on voyages
to Australia, the west coast of America, and
the Far East, as well as the occasional cruise
to the Mediterranean, Scandinavia and the Pacific
Isles.
He finished his service on Orontes as Deputy
Purser on her final voyage to the breakers yard,
a fitting if somewhat sad end.

Joe married
and has three children and nine grandchildren. He
had a successful career as a banker but fostered his
love of the sea by collecting old film of the great
liners of his time.
Now that he's retired, Joe can indulge his passion
for ships and the sea by cruising. He prefers the
smaller liners, sailing to all corners of the earth
and of course still filming his voyages to bring the
story up to date.
In 2004, Joe co-produced a three-part series of films
entitled "Crossing the Oceans".

that success he has now issued four new DVD's on his
own - Cruising in the Twentieth Century
(Parts One to Three) and Sailing East.
Details of all seven films can be found below.
The films are compilations of footage from his archive,
organised by theme or shipping line. All the footage
was originally taken by amateurs - often crew members
- on 8mm or 16mm cine cameras. Each film has a musical
soundtrack and commentary.
Joe donates £1 per film sold to the Mission
to Seafarers.

SAILING
EAST
In 1959, P&O acquired most of the remaining
shares of the Orient Line. The shipping line
was then retitled the P&O - Orient Line and
this title remained until 1966 when it reverted
to P&O.
This film covers the period of that merger using
film most of which has never been seen before.
Sailing East features footage of the following
ships: Orcades, Oronsay, Orsova, Oriana, Chitral,
Cathay, Chusan, Arcadia,
Iberia and Canberra.

CROSSING
THE OCEANS - PART TWO
Part Two of our series begins with extensive
footage of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. The
transatlantic theme continues with striking
scenes of United States and two other US liners.
Two Canadian Pacific liners are shown leaving
Liverpool en-route to Montreal. The Royal Mail
Line is represented by Andes and Arlanza as
we move to the South American routes. Akaroa
and Northern Star fly the Shaw Savill flag together
with other famous names. A long chapter is devoted
to the Union Castle Line and we finish with
rare film of British troopships.

CROSSING
THE OCEANS - PART THREE
Part Three celebrates the famous ships that
sailed from Europe to the New World in the years
after the Second World War. The film begins
with an extended sequence showing life on board
the Patonga, a P&O cargo vessel, on the
long voyage to Sydney. We move on then to some
classic Italian liners sailing under the famous
colours of the Costa, Italian and Sitmar lines.
The flagships of the Chandris line are next,
fondly remembered by many thousands of emigrants.
Many French, Dutch, German and Scandanavian
liners follow.

CRUISING
IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY - PART THREE
This time we have chosen the P&O liner “Iberia”
as our host vessel, but in truth the footage
was shot by a number of people on various ships
in the 1960’s. We will visit eight Mediterranean
ports, Gibraltar, Naples, Rhodes, Piraeus, Venice,
Cannes, Monte Carlo and Lisbon before returning
to Southampton.
During the voyage we will see various other
liners
and cargo vessels, notably Canberra, Oriana,
Cristoforo Colombo, Giulio Cesare, Leonardo
da Vinci, Conte Biancamano, Independence, Australis,
Queen Anna Maria, Mount Olympus, Angola, Santa
Maria and others.
